Bodies of two Chinese backpackers found in Australian floodwaters

Two Chinese backpackers died after their car was swept into floodwaters near Kilkivan, with over 400mm of rain falling in 24 hours, police and local officials confirmed.

  • On March 12, Queensland Police announced two bodies believed to be a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were recovered in a submerged vehicle near Kilkivan, believed to be two Chinese backpackers.
  • Extreme rainfall and rising rivers led to the state's highest three-day totals Sunday through Tuesday, triggering widespread flooding across the Burnett River catchment including Kilkivan and Bundaberg.
  • Search teams located a vehicle during Wednesday operations and deployed water rescue crews and more than 30 police officers to the region.
  • Families and the Chinese Consulate in Brisbane were contacted, police said next of kin have been notified and formal identification processes continue; Glen Hartwig, mayor of Gympie, called the deaths 'an absolute tragedy' and urged better tourist flood warnings.
  • The wider flood emergency shows the Burnett River peaked at 7.4m, short of 7.6m forecast, while heavy falls up to 250 millimetres and 400mm in places flooded homes and cut power in Queensland.
