‘Blood Moon’ to Appear to the US in March

The total lunar eclipse on March 3 includes nearly an hour of totality and will be best seen from the western U.S. under darker skies, NASA said.

  • On Tuesday, March 3, a total lunar eclipse will cross the skies over the contiguous United States, turning the moon a deep reddish color and visible across half the planet.
  • When Earth's umbra covers the lunar surface, short wavelengths scatter in the atmosphere while red and orange light pass through, illuminating the Moon with a reddish hue.
  • Totality begins at 6:03 a.m. EST, the greatest eclipse occurs at 6:33 a.m. EST, and it lasts 59 minutes, starting with the penumbral contact at 3:43 a.m. EST.
  • Residents in the western half of the country are positioned to catch more of the eclipse under darker skies, and no special eye protection is required; binoculars , telescopes, or telephoto lenses enhance the view.
  • This is the third total lunar eclipse in the past year, following March 14 and Sept. 7, 2025, and the next well-seen U.S. total won't occur until June 25, 2029.
