Blaze near Cathedral Grove, but B.C. fire service says ancient forest not at risk

VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, AUG 5 – The Wesley Ridge fire remains contained with no new growth threatening the ancient Cathedral Grove forest, while more than 130 wildfires burn across British Columbia, officials said.

  • In a Tuesday update, Madison Dahl of the BC Wildfire Service said the Cathedral Grove is `not threatened` by the Wesley Ridge fire burning 60 kilometres northwest of Nanaimo.

  • While fire behavior update on Tuesday noted no overnight growth at the northeast corner of the fire near Little Qualicum River Regional Park, smoke remains within the fire perimeter, according to Dahl.
