A 500-pound tagged black bear has taken refuge under a California home amid habitat loss from wildfires, with wildlife experts handling up to five similar cases weekly.
- Homeowner Ken Johnson discovered last week when a camera captured a roughly 500-pound ear-tagged black bear living beneath his Altadena, California home.
- Fire-Scarred habitat has pushed wildlife into neighborhoods, as shortly after the Eaton Fire more than 14,000 acres burned in Altadena and Pasadena and bears took refuge in evacuated homes.
- In April and June Johnson found structural damage, including pulled bricks and a ripped wooden frame, then installed cameras in June; while replacing batteries on Friday, he heard a huge growl and called the sheriff and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
- CDFW said a biologist would assess the situation and may remove the bear, but law enforcement advised Johnson to stay indoors as field experts handle two other incidents.
