Big 12 Commissioner Declines to Address Sorsby Gambling Saga and Describes League as `16 Strong’
- On Tuesday, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark opened football media days in Frisco, Texas, declining to discuss the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga while announcing a multi-year partnership with Monster Energy.
- Sorsby, who admitted to placing thousands of wagers worth at least $90,000 on college and pro sports, remains ineligible after dropping his lawsuit against the NCAA. The conference sought to preserve bylaws for potential sanctions against Texas Tech.
- The entitlement partnership, worth more than $20 million annually, adds more than $1 million per year for each of the 16 conference members. Co-branded Monster Energy logos will appear on fields, courts, and jerseys.
- Pushing the Big 12 as the 'most globally relevant' conference, Yormark noted that 14% of student-athletes hail from outside the United States. The league will host two international football games in Ireland and London this season.
- Expansion of the College Football Playoff to a 24-team model remains under consideration by Yormark and other commissioners. He plans an August meeting with board members and athletic directors to address conference competitiveness next year.
