Descendant of Nazi opponent tries to remove right-wing party’s wreath at Hitler plot memorial event
Security staff intervened after Tobias Korenke tried to remove the party’s wreath, and it was damaged during the scuffle, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Tobias Korenke, a great-nephew of Protestant theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, attempted to remove a wreath placed by the Alternative for Germany at a Berlin commemoration event, sparking a scuffle.
- The event marked the 82nd anniversary of the July 20, 1944, failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler by Claus Schenk Graf and Wehrmacht officers who sought to overthrow National Socialist rule and end the Second World War.
- Security staff intervened as the wreath was damaged during the scuffle. Korenke told DPA, "Many descendants, including me, feel a really great anger when we see that the AfD is laying wreaths here."
- In separate political developments, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group will meet next Wednesday to choose a successor to Jens Spahn, who is stepping down as group leader.
- Although the Mritz National Park wildfire is extinguished, the Schwerin Ministry of the Environment warned that hazards remain due to leftover ammunition in the affected area.
