Talon returns to frontline politics as Benin's first Senate president
Former Benin president Patrice Talon has been elected the country's first Senate president, months after leaving office. The new upper chamber, created under a constitutional reform, places Talon at the helm of a key institution despite stepping down after two presidential terms.
The former businessman, who led the country from 2016 to 2026, was elected on Thursday 6 August for five years as head of this new chamber.
The former Head of State of Benin is taking the lead in this new parliamentary institution, which was established by a constitutional reform which he initiated in the last months of his second presidential term.
