Relentless rain exceeding 300 mm in 12 hours caused multiple landslides and floods, killing 20 and stranding hundreds of tourists in the Darjeeling hills, officials said.

  • On Oct 5, 2025, at least 20 people were killed in landslides across the Darjeeling and Mirik hills, North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha said, `As of now, the death toll is 20. It is likely to go up`.
  • On Saturday night, heavy downpours dumped over 300 mm in 12 hours, saturating slopes in North Bengal while excessive flow into the Sankosh river and from Bhutan and Sikkim worsened flooding.
  • Rescue teams including the National Disaster Response Force have joined operations, pulling at least 40 people from debris in Dhar Gaon, Nagarakata, while bridges and NH 10 were washed away.
