Bedford train crash driver died from 'traumatic injuries to brainstem and chest'
A post-mortem recorded traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, while investigators said the train passed a red signal before the collision.
On Tuesday, an inquest opened at Bedfordshire and Luton Coroners Court into the death of 60-year-old train driver Shaun Burton, who died in a collision near Bedford Rail station on June 19.
Train 1H46 struck the rear of stationary train 1B67 south of Bedford Rail station after the lead train stopped due to a fault; the Rail Accident Investigation Branch confirmed 1H46 passed a red signal.
Pathologist findings revealed Burton died from "traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, pending further investigation." The crash injured 162 people, with 102 requiring hospital treatment.
Senior Coroner Emma Whitting adjourned the inquest pending completion of investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police into the collision's circumstances.
East Midlands Railway managing director Will Rogers paid tribute to Burton as a "dedicated railway professional" whose "commitment, service and professionalism touched the lives of colleagues and passengers.
