Bears CB Nahshon Wright Recalls Interception that 'Meant the World' After College Coach's Shooting Death

Wright made a key interception in a 19-17 win, dedicating it to Beam, his late mentor who stepped in after Wright's father was killed, and plans to give the ball to Beam's family.

  • During the Bears' game Sunday, Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright recorded an interception in Minneapolis and said `He was watching over me`, dedicating the play to John Beam.
  • Although Beam was shot on Nov. 13 and died at Laney College, Wright said they still spoke nearly every week, and Beam stepped in as a father figure after Wright's father was killed in 2017.
  • Using his size, Nahshon Wright used his 6-foot-5 frame and six-inch height advantage to high-point an underthrown pass from J.J. McCarthy over Jordan Addison during the end zone play.
  • After the play, Nahshon Wright fell to one knee and teammates Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard III hugged him while Bears coach Ben Johnson called it `That was a huge one for us, right before halftime`.
  • Beam's national profile means his mentorship resonates widely; both Nahshon and Rejzohn Wright played for John Beam at Laney before transferring to Oregon State, and Nahshon has started nine of 10 games after Jaylon Johnson's injury.
