B.C. to cut 2035 zero-emission-vehicle sales mandate from 100% to 75%
The province will keep 26% targets for 2026 and 2027 while funding 75 new charging projects.
- On Wednesday, B.C. Attorney-General Niki Sharma introduced legislation reducing the 2035 zero-emission vehicle sales mandate from 100 per cent to 75 per cent, aligning the province with federal goals.
- The Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions stated the alignment will provide certainty for automakers while addressing slower-than-expected consumer adoption and regulatory burden challenges.
- Sales compliance requirements for 2026 and 2027 remain at 26 per cent, while 2025 ZEV sales reached just over 18 per cent, down from more than 22 per cent in 2024.
- Energy Minister Adrian Dix said the measures provide more consumer choices, while Barry Penner of the Energy Futures Institute argued the mandate was flawed and ignored market realities.
- Targets for 2028 through 2030 will be informed by federal plans expected this summer, ensuring the province maintains alignment with emerging national policies.
