B.C. backs expansion at Mount Polley mine that could extend operations until 2033
The expansion allows deepening of the pit and extends operations to 2033 with no new land disturbance, following consultation with local First Nations, officials said.
- On Aug. 28, 2025, the B.C. government issued a consent order allowing the Springer Pit expansion project at Mount Polley, approved by Environment and Parks Minister Tamara Davidson and Mining and Critical Minerals Minister Jagrup Brar.
- Given the 2014 tailings collapse that spilled 17 million cubic metres of water and 8 million cubic metres of material, the Environmental Assessment Office concluded the expansion stays within Mount Polley mine's existing footprint.
- The project calls for deepening the existing Springer Pit and expanding a disposal area for 'potentially acid-generating rock', while continuing treated water discharge into Quesnel Lake within the existing mine footprint.
- Earlier this month the B.C. Supreme Court dismissed a Xatsull First Nation bid to stop raising the tailings dam level, and Williams Lake and Xatsull First Nations were consulted in the assessment.
- The project still requires permits under the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act, and if all authorizations are received, its operation could extend to 2033.
