B.C. Conservatives Pledge to Build More Long-Term Care Beds in Plan for Seniors
Lorne Doerkson says 7,200 people are waiting for long-term care as the party promises more beds, home care and tax relief for seniors.
On Friday, B.C. Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson announced a comprehensive seniors plan, pledging to reverse NDP changes to the property-tax deferment program and expand care access across British Columbia.
Doerkson criticized the NDP for cancelling seven long-term-care projects earlier this year after designating them "repaced" due to costs, and for changing the property-tax deferment program to charge compound interest.
The party promises to implement Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt's recommendation for consumer-directed home care while providing free shingles vaccines and financial assistance for hearing aids for seniors on low, fixed incomes.
By reviewing design requirements, the Conservatives aim to deliver affordable beds faster, countering the NDP's rule-heavy models that allegedly pushed some proposed beds to $1.8 million each.
Proposed legislation—the Long Term Care Access and Transparency Act—would publish monthly regional waitlist data and hospice capacity, setting new accountability standards for seniors' care across the province.
