B.C. NDP Promises Faster Health Care with New Diagnostic Equipment
The plan adds 8 MRI machines and 10 CT scanners and creates regional waitlists that officials say could halve surgery waits for most patients.
On Tuesday, NDP Leader David Eby announced plans to add eight new MRI machines and 10 CT scanners, including the first-ever MRI unit for Eagle Ridge Hospital in Coquitlam.
Since forming government in 2017, the NDP has hired over 1,800 specialists and installed 21 MRI units and 15 CT scanners, boosting completed MRI exams by 108% and CT exams by 61%.
Eby also proposed implementing coordinated regional surgical waitlists, allowing patients to select the shortest wait or specific surgeons; research suggests this system could halve wait times across all regions.
A new BC Health Passport app will provide real-time referral tracking, allowing patients to monitor expected wait times and access health records directly from their phones.
Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson recently pledged a $50-million fund for emergency room closures, though Eby questioned the Conservatives' funding source, noting 96% of British Columbians pay nothing more under his plan.
