B.C. NDP Promises to Freeze Car Insurance Rates for 3 Years
Eby says ICBC has significant reserves and the freeze would keep basic premiums stable while the NDP argues the no-fault model saved $1.5 billion.
On Thursday, British Columbia New Democrat Leader David Eby pledged to freeze basic ICBC rates for three years until spring 2030, protecting drivers from rising costs if his party wins the October 24 election.
This commitment relies on the Crown corporation's 'Enhanced Care' no-fault system, launched May 1, 2021, which saved $1.5 billion by removing legal costs and maintains 'significant reserves' enabling the freeze.
Interim Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson's leaked September 29 letter proposed reversing the no-fault plan, suggesting private competition and hybrid systems to better support catastrophic injury victims.
Eby criticized the Conservative proposal, claiming it would double insurance costs and citing Alberta's 65% premium surge under a hybrid system, arguing the current model protects drivers from skyrocketing bills.
With the election set for October 24, Doerkson also promised a $1,000 tax cut for most residents, while Eby pledged to re-establish an all-party committee to improve compensation for catastrophic injury victims.
