B.C. Election: Eby Vows to Fast-Track Int'l Medical Grads, Bring More Docs to Rural Areas
The NDP leader said qualified international medical graduates would be fast-tracked and clinic hours extended to improve access to care.
NDP leader David Eby promised on Friday to increase doctors and nurses in Surrey while extending clinic hours for same-day appointments to improve local health care access.
Eby's announcement comes as the province approaches the snap election this month, with political leaders competing for votes in Surrey's 10 ridings split between NDP and Conservative wins two years ago.
The NDP platform includes adding 1,000 training seats for nurses, nurse practitioners, and allied health workers, plus an accelerated "bridging to practice" program for qualified international medical graduates already living in British Columbia.
"Better and faster care means avoiding visits to the emergency room," Eby stated, emphasizing same-day appointments as key to reducing pressure on the medical system.
Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson and CentreBC leader Elenore Sturko campaigned in Surrey earlier this week, both targeting the same ridings as the NDP heads toward the October 24 election.
