B.C. approves block-caving for Red Chris Mine, site where three workers were trapped
The change allows underground mining at the copper and gold site and includes 27 binding conditions on water, air and ground stability.
British Columbia approved an amended environmental assessment certificate to allow block-caving at the Red Chris Mine, where three workers were trapped last July.
The Red Chris Mine currently operates as an open pit mine but will transition to block-caving, an underground mining method.
Three workers were trapped more than 500 metres underground due to two collapses, stayed safe in a refuge station, and were rescued after more than two days.
The approval included 27 binding conditions such as monitoring water, air quality, and ground stability, with consent from the Tahltan Central Government.
