Mali shuts Canadian gold miner's office over ‘non-payment of taxes’
Malian authorities have shut the Canadian miner Barrick Gold's office in the capital Bamako over the alleged non-payment of taxes, two sources close to the matter told Reuters, in the latest escalation in a protracted dispute over mining revenues.
Bamako is demanding millions of dollars of tax arrears from the company that denounces the actions of the junta of Assimi Goïta, which claims retroactive effects for its new mining code adopted in 2024.
The Malian authorities closed the offices of the Canadian mining group Barrick Gold in Bamako on Tuesday for "non-payment of taxes" according to Malian tax services, the last episode of an arm of iron that the industrial and the Malian state are engaged in.
