Bangladesh to buy 11 more Boeing jets as it seeks closer US trade ties
On Wednesday in New York, Bangladesh officials signed an agreement to purchase 11 additional aircraft from Boeing, expanding Biman Bangladesh Airlines' planned orders to 25 jets as Dhaka seeks closer trade ties with the United States.
Officials aim to ease pressure from a roughly $6 billion trade imbalance and reduce potential tariff risks affecting Bangladesh's export-driven garment sector.
The latest commitment comprises five Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners and six 737 MAX 8 jets, following an earlier $3.7 billion deal signed in April for 14 aircraft with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2035.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen called the purchase a "win-win" for US-Bangladesh relations, while Biman Bangladesh Chairman Rumee Hossain described it as "an important step in Biman's ongoing fleet renewal and network expansion."
While Biman Bangladesh pursues fleet modernization, European rival Airbus remains in contention to supply additional aircraft, though the airline currently lacks Federal Aviation Administration Category 1 status limiting North America expansion.
