Ohio Has More than 950 Active Bald Eagle Nests Across the State, Wildlife Division Says
UNITED STATES, JUL 3 – The Trump Administration aims to weaken habitat protections to boost drilling and logging despite bald eagle populations growing to over 71,400 nesting pairs, officials said.
- The Ohio Division of Wildlife announced that in 2025, the state had a total of 964 active bald eagle nests, present in 87 out of 88 counties.
- After decades of conservation efforts following the bald eagle’s status as an endangered species, Ohio’s population has grown significantly from just a handful of nesting pairs in 1979.
- The nest census involved over 1,800 reports from citizen scientists, mapping nests mostly near waterways due to eagles' reliance on fish.
- The census found a 78% nest success rate in 2025, with 1.3 eaglets per active nest, reflecting a continuing recovery despite threats like electrocutions and habitat changes.
- This recovery highlights conservation gains since the 1973 Endangered Species Act, though proposed federal rule changes could endanger habitats essential to bald eagle survival.
