Balcas workers to commence week long strike as pay dispute continues
Around 150 Unite members will walk out for seven days after rejecting a pay offer of 50 pence an hour for each of the next two years.
- On Friday, approximately 150 workers at Balcas in Enniskillen will begin a seven-day strike starting at 5am. The industrial action stems from an intensifying pay dispute between the union and management.
- Staff rejected a four per cent pay rise, which is lower than the 5.1 per cent increase given to Tesco store workers. This action follows three separate one-day strikes over the past month.
- Balcas, owned by Longford-based Glennon Brothers, recorded pre-tax profits of £18.7 million in its latest accounts. The company operates sawmills across Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England.
- Production at the Enniskillen sawmill is expected to face significant disruption, as Unite warned the prolonged stoppage will impact output. The facility is Northern Ireland's largest sawmill.
- Management has failed to improve its pay offer despite earlier industrial action, according to Unite regional officer Albert Hewitt. "The strike at Balcas will impact timber supplies across the region, but this is entirely the fault of management," Hewitt said.
