China, Vietnam reopen railway line amid tourism boom after 5-year pause

China and Vietnam have reopened a passenger train route that was suspended during the early months of the pandemic, a move that could boost already surging tourism between the neighbours and attract more international travellers to visit the mainland without a visa, analysts said.

After five years of stop yesterday were reopened the passenger connections by train between Hanoi and Nanning. The two Countries recently announced also a new high-speed line to the port of Haiphong, part of the joint strategies to strengthen tourism, regional exchanges and trade.

As Beijing expands visa-free travel, the route could also make it easier for international tourists to visit China, analysts say.

At a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that China give top priority to promoting railway cooperation with Vietnam, determined to start construction of the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong route in 2025.
