AWS Outage Sparks Smart Bed Malfunctions
- On Monday, Amazon Web Services caused widespread disruptions, leaving many in the United States without online tools and causing some smart mattress tech to malfunction.
- The company attributed the incident to DNS problems and said the outage earlier this week disrupted services like Canva, Disney+, and Hulu; Amazon says it will soon provide a detailed report.
- Customer complaints included specific temperature and usability problems, such as Eight Sleep users reporting stuck beds, X user Isaiah Granet's mattress over nine degrees hotter, and user Art Levy waking to 80 degrees.
- Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti apologised and said it's `not the experience we want to provide.`; he confirmed fixes were completed by 10 p.m. ET on Oct. 20 and the company began outage-proofing work to finish by Oct. 22.
- The incident highlights that connected sleep tech, such as Eight Sleep’s Pod 4 mattress cover and Pod 5 Core with cooling/heating and sleep-tracking features, depended on connectivity.
