In January, the dynamic increase in wages continued, the average gross wage increased by 10.4% to 668 thousand forints. Compared to 2010, there are now 1 million more people working in Hungary, almost 4.7 million people, while the average wage has more than tripled and the minimum wage has increased four times, said Dr. Sándor Czomba is State Secretary for Employment Policy.

Our wages have increased at a faster pace than other European Union countries, the latest Eurostat report shows. In an increasingly competitive market, companies feared that otherwise they would be left without Romanian employees. However, the cost of an hour of work in Romania is higher only than in Bulgaria.

The dynamic increase in wages continued in January, with the gross average salary increasing by 10.4 percent to HUF 668,000. According to analysts, the average salary may increase by around 8-9 percent this year as a whole.

Gross earnings 10.4% higher than a year earlier

Full-time employees’ average gross earnings were HUF 668,100 and average net earnings with tax benefits reached HUF 459,000 in January 2025. Average gross earnings grew by 10.4%, net earnings increased by 10.2% and real earnings were 4.6% higher than a year earlier. Median gross earnings were HUF 539,500, and median net earnings were HUF 373,600, both surpassing the value for the same period of the previous year by 9.3%.
