Authorities shoot and kill black bear believed to have fatally mauled man in Arkansas

A juvenile male black bear was killed after being linked to the rare fatal attack on a camper, amid Arkansas' estimated 5,000 to 6,000 black bears, officials said.

  • On Thursday, Oct. 2, Max Thomas, 60, of Springfield, Missouri, was found several yards from his Sam's Throne Campground campsite; Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said the cause was `animal mauling`.
  • On Sunday, Oct. 5, cameras at Sam's Throne captured images of a bear near the campsite, and authorities said the photos resembled those taken by the victim, triggering a search with local hunters and hounds.
  • Arkansas Game and Fish officials described the bear as a juvenile male likely weaned this year, with weight estimates between 150 and 170 pounds.
  • Sam's Throne Campground will remain closed while authorities transport the dead bear to Little Rock, Arkansas for necropsy and DNA testing to confirm a 100% match.
  • This was the second fatal bear attack in Arkansas within a month, following Vernon Patton, 72's death, and officials urged campers to secure food and avoid approaching animals, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.
