Australia's highest-paid TV presenter faces backlash over Tommy Robinson interview
Nine said Stefanovic’s podcast work and Today role were no longer workable, ending his two-decade run after backlash over an interview with Tommy Robinson.
On Friday, Nine Network confirmed the immediate departure of Today show host Karl Stefanovic, bringing forward his previously scheduled exit following fallout from a podcast interview.
Stefanovic's independent podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show, aired an interview with British activist Tommy Robinson on Tuesday, which Nine removed from digital platforms within 12 hours.
Nine chief executive Matt Stanton stated in an email on Friday it was "the right time for Karl to move on from the Today show and Nine," following crisis meetings at the network's Sydney headquarters.
Declaring himself "free" and "truly independent" in a YouTube video, Stefanovic addressed his exit after 21 years, expressing gratitude to viewers while acknowledging the difficulty of recent days.
Although his contract was slated to expire in December 2026, Stefanovic exits immediately; he retains a newly-inked radio deal with ARN but admitted uncertainty about his next professional step.
