Arkansas AG Announces $5.5M Settlement with Family Dollar over Rat Infestation

The settlement ends a 2022 consumer protection lawsuit after federal investigators found more than 3,400 rodents at the distribution center.

  • On Thursday, Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin announced a $5.5 million settlement with Family Dollar and Dollar Tree entities over a rat-infested distribution center in West Memphis.
  • Investigations determined the West Memphis facility was overrun with rodents since at least 2020, prompting a 2022 recall that shuttered 404 stores across six states to remove contaminated products.
  • Family Dollar will pay the state $3.9 million within 20 business days, with $1.6 million suspended due to the retailer's compliance with a federal plea agreement reached in February 2024.
  • "Arkansans-- particularly those who rely on neighborhood discount stores for everyday essentials-- are entitled to products that are safe, lawfully sold, and honestly marketed," Griffin said.
  • Following a $100 million overhaul completed in 2024, the distribution center reopened; meanwhile, Dollar Tree sold Family Dollar and its approximately 7,100 stores to investment firms in 2025.
