WVU Football to Retire Pat White's No. 5

White will become the seventh football player honored as WVU cites his 35-8 record as a starter and four straight bowl wins.

  • On Friday, the West Virginia University Department of Athletics announced that former quarterback Pat White's No. 5 jersey will be retired this fall at a home game.
  • "Pat White was a generational player for West Virginia football and led our program through perhaps the greatest era in our history," WVU Director of Athletics Wren Baker stated. His documented legacy earned this ultimate honor.
  • White set 19 records during his career, including 10,529 total yards of offense and 4,480 rushing yards, while becoming the first quarterback to lead his team to four consecutive bowl victories from 2005-08.
  • The Athletic Council updated retirement criteria to allow this modern recognition, enabling White to become the seventh Mountaineer joining Major Harris , Ira Rodgers , and Chuck Howley .
  • Baker noted that the department will share more announcements regarding the specific game this summer, while White continues serving on the coaching staff and contributing to the program.
