Athletics get wrong end of an apparent ABS mistake against the Yankees
Mark Kotsay said the dugout replay showed the pitch was 0.8 inches low, but the Athletics lost one challenge after the strike was confirmed.
On Saturday, the Automated Ball-Strike system appeared to hit a rare glitch during the Athletics' game against the New York Yankees, affecting a disputed strike call in the fourth inning.
Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers challenged a 2-0 pitch from Yankees starter Ryan Weathers, but home plate umpire Adam Beck announced the ABS confirmed it as a strike, causing the team to lose their challenge.
Replay on MLB.com showed the pitch was 0.8 inches low and should have been called a ball, though manager Mark Kotsay noted umpires rely solely on information provided through their earpieces by the ABS controller.
The call proved mostly moot as Langeliers eventually drew a walk during the Athletics' 6-4 victory over the Yankees, though Kotsay was unable to regain the lost challenge between innings.
Manager Mark Kotsay said the team needs clarification from the league regarding the ABS system's performance and plans to initiate a conversation to address the error.
