Asylum seeker found guilty of raping woman, 18, in Nottinghamshire park
- A jury of five men and seven women returned unanimous guilty verdicts on two counts of rape against Sheraz Malik, 28, at Birmingham Crown Court after around three hours of deliberation.
- On June 29 last year, the alleged assault occurred in Sutton Lawn park, Sutton-in-Ashfield after the complainant, then 18-year-old woman, shared two bottles of vodka with a male friend who left her with a group.
- Prosecutors described an assault sequence where the complainant was 'alone, drunk and obviously vulnerable' and allegedly raped in isolated spots, the complainant denied any consent by video link, and Sheraz Malik denied slapping her, claiming `I really like you` and `I really enjoyed it`.
- Judge Simon Ash KC ordered a pre-sentence report, remanded Sheraz Malik into custody, and set a mention hearing on February 6 to fix a sentencing date.
- It can now be reported Malik is an asylum seeker born in Pakistan who previously lived in Italy, Germany and France; Nottinghamshire Police said another outstanding suspect remains sought, praising officers and the victim.
