Nigeria: ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike, Gives Govt, States Ultimatum
ASUU says it may resume its suspended strike if governments fail to clear 3.5 months of withheld pay and remit billions in deductions.
- On Friday, The Academic Staff Union of Universities threatened to shut down public universities, warning it may activate its suspended strike "without any further notice" unless the Federal Government urgently resolves outstanding salary and agreement implementation issues.
- Lecturers remain owed 3.5 months of withheld salaries despite four months paid by the present administration, while the government has failed to remit billions of naira in third-party deductions linked to ASUU's rejection of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System .
- While ASUU commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for fully adopting the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, the union warned governors in Kano, Edo, and Plateau that failure to implement could plunge universities into an "industrial crisis of monumental proportions."
- Separately, ASUU opened confrontation with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over the two-year tenure extension granted to Osun State University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adegbooye, arguing the law permits only a single five-year term.
- Beyond university-specific grievances, ASUU accused the Federal Government and state governments of increasingly shifting attention from workers' welfare to the 2027 general elections following the lifting of the ban on electioneering campaigns on August 19.
