Esther Rantzen urges Lords not to block assisted dying
UNITED KINGDOM, JUN 21 – Labour MP Kim Leadbeater's Assisted Dying Bill passed Commons by 23 votes and now faces detailed scrutiny and possible amendments in the House of Lords before becoming law.
Dame Esther Rantzen urged members of the House of Lords not to block the Terminally Ill Adults Bill, stating their role is to scrutinize rather than oppose.
Lord Shinkwin emphasized the need for careful review of the bill due to its narrow passage in the Commons with only a 23-vote majority.
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson indicated the necessity for amendments to strengthen the bill and protect vulnerable individuals.
Labour MP Kim Leadbeater warned that delays in the Lords could result in the legislation running out of parliamentary time to pass.
