As It Happened: Budget 2027 Announced by Ministers
The package includes €1.5 billion in permanent tax cuts and €7 billion in extra spending, with higher payments for pensioners and carers.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Simon Harris and Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers delivered the €125.6 billion Budget 2027, introducing measures spanning tax, childcare, and welfare spending.
The government sought to remedy criticisms from last year's budget by spreading tax cuts and spending increases across the board, abandoning previous targeted approaches.
Highlights include a €1.3 billion income tax package and childcare costs capped at €550 per month, while the higher tax threshold rises to €46,500.
Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty argued the "majority" of workers "won't get a sniff of the €750 tax break," drawing opposition criticism of insufficient impact.
Labour Party TD Ged Nash described the measures as "devoid of ambition" amid 3.9% inflation, questioning whether budget relief will reach struggling households this year.
