In 1984 I started as a lecturer at Leiden University. At that time I was strongly influenced by Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), a philosopher who profoundly shaped my thinking. His work taught me the importance of critical and independent thinking — something that seems to be increasingly scarce at universities today, under pressure from ideological uniformity.
