Armenian ambassador praises Canada as group accuses Carney of dialing down peace push
Ambassador Anahit Harutyunyan says Canada’s backing strengthens Armenia’s democratic institutions, while Armenian-Canadian critics call Ottawa’s peace efforts a photo-op.
Ambassador Anahit Harutyunyan is praising Canada's support for democratic reforms, even as the Armenian National Committee of Canada argues the federal government is easing up on efforts to bring peace to the Caucasus region.
Sevag Belian, head of the Armenian National Committee of Canada, said the diaspora is "a bit confused" by Ottawa's approach, calling Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent visit to Yerevan "just a photo-op."
Concerns persist that Carney failed to publicly address Azerbaijan's detention of Armenians, alongside community anxiety regarding Canada strengthening ties with Turkey, a nation accused of committing genocide against Armenians a century ago.
Despite the criticism, Ambassador Harutyunyan defended high-level political engagement, stating it creates "good ground" for concrete collaboration while Armenia pursues trade diversification with Canada.
Armenia prepares for a June 7 election amid accusations of power consolidation from the International Observatory for Democracy in Armenia, while U.S. President Donald Trump brokers a peace agreement involving large regional investments.
