Arjun Bijlani And Neha Respond To Religious Backlash, Say Online Harassment Is Unacceptable
The couple said Neha did not know the shirt’s meaning and urged people to stop the abuse after fans objected to the outfit.
On Wednesday, actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife Neha Swami Bijlani issued a public apology regarding a T-shirt Neha wore earlier this week featuring Urdu text referring to the Prophet Mohammed.
Videos from the couple's recent outing surfaced on social media, prompting fans to object to Neha's outfit, claiming the Urdu writing on the garment was disrespectful to the Prophet.
Arjun explained they were completely unaware of the text's meaning, as they received the T-shirt as a gift from a fan while visiting Bangkok and reiterated their apology.
While accepting their mistake, Arjun stated that "trolling, abusive language, curses and threats directed at Neha are deeply distressing and unacceptable," urging compassion over harassment.
The couple emphasized they respect all religions and faiths, writing that "mutual respect and dialogue are far more constructive than abuse and intimidation" and requesting dignity in addressing the matter.
Arjun Bijlani's wife, Neha Swami, is embroiled in controversy. Neha's T-shirt features the word "Allah" in Urdu, sparking controversy. Muslim users have called it offensive and demanded action.
