Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crash kills pilot and trooper during shooter response
Two Arizona Department of Public Safety crew members died when their helicopter crashed while providing tactical air support during an active shooter incident in Flagstaff.
- Wednesday night, an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crashed north of Historic Route 66 between Thomson Street and Mark Lane in Flagstaff, Arizona.
- Responding to an active, officer-involved shooting, the Arizona Department of Public Safety aircraft was on scene after witness reports around 8:40 p.m. and just after 10 p.m.
- Amanda Brewer, a Flagstaff resident, described hearing rotor blades and a very large crash that shook her house, while she and neighbors reported a large fire in the forest behind Brewer's house and dozens of gunshots, with officers on the ground arriving within minutes.
- Flagstaff police ordered a shelter-in-place for one neighborhood at about 10:15 p.m. and asked people to avoid the area; investigators reported no officers were hurt and the shooting suspect is in custody.
- Officials noted there is no ongoing threat to the public while investigators probe the scene, and Flagstaff police would not confirm if anyone died in the DPS helicopter crash.
