Argentina economic activity dips 1.4% in July
Wholesale and manufacturing led the decline as seven of 15 sectors still posted growth, INDEC said.
- On Thursday, Sept. 24, Argentina's official statistics agency INDEC reported that economic activity fell 1.4% in July compared to the same month last year, marking a significant downturn for Latin America's third-largest economy.
- Seasonally adjusted, the EMAE fell 2.9% in July from June—the largest monthly drop since the Covid-19 pandemic—continuing an erratic pattern of alternating monthly corrections and recoveries throughout 2026.
- Eight of 15 sectors tracked by INDEC recorded year-on-year declines, led by wholesale and retail trade falling 5.1% and manufacturing dropping 4.6%, while the fishing sector surged 425.5% against the broader trend.
- Economist Facundo Beltramone of the Libertad think tank characterized the data as showing "a sign of weakness at the margin," noting figures must be viewed within a trajectory of "considerable volatility."
- While the government's Budget bill predicts 4.5 percent growth this year, experts in the Central Bank's REM survey forecast 2.1 percent for 2026, 2.9 percent in 2027, and 3.0 percent in 2028.
