UN body says over 1,000 have been killed seeking food in Gaza since May as hunger crisis worsens
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE, JUL 22 – The United Nations reports 1,054 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces near aid sites since late May, with 766 deaths linked to Gaza Humanitarian Foundation locations, worsening Gaza's food crisis.
- On Tuesday, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said `The so called 'Gaza Humanitarian Foundation' distribution scheme is a sadistic death trap`, adding that snipers open fire randomly on crowds as if they are given a licence to kill.
- Following the 11-week siege starting March 2, 2025, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began supplying aid in late May once restrictions eased, Philippe Lazzarini noted.
- UNRWA estimates show more than 1,000 people killed since late May, with the majority near GHF sites and 201 on other convoys' routes.
- UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said staff, doctors and humanitarian workers are fainting on duty due to hunger and exhaustion, adding `No one is spared: caretakers in Gaza are also in need of care.`
- The agency has appealed for a humanitarian ceasefire to ensure safe passage for food and medical supplies, amid calls from UN officials for an investigation into Gaza's deadly aid distribution system.
