Apple Says a Digital Version of Your Passport Is Coming Soon to iPhones

The feature supports over 250 U.S. airports and helps travelers comply with REAL ID rules to avoid delays during domestic TSA security checks.

  • On Sunday at Money20/20 USA, Jennifer Bailey announced Apple will soon let users add a digital U.S. passport to their iPhone, sharing the update during her Las Vegas keynote.
  • Despite the initial WWDC announcement, Apple later said the passport feature in iOS 26 is delayed until later this year as support expands to 12 states and Puerto Rico, with West Virginia added last week.
  • Bailey pointed to Wallet's growth, saying Apple Pay stopped over $1 billion in fraud over the past year and reduces fraud by over 60%, supported by more than 11,000 banks and 90% of U.S. retailers.
  • Apple says users will soon create a passport-linked Apple Digital ID to present at select TSA checkpoints, offering a secure, private, and REAL ID-compliant option that could reduce extra screening for travelers.
  • The launch comes with limits: the Digital passport is not a replacement for a physical passport and only works for domestic U.S. travel; more than 250 of about 487 airports accept it, but Apple may delay rollout until December with unclear update requirements.
