Anthropic Unifies Memory Across Claude and Cowork

Anthropic says the update lets Claude carry context between chat and Cowork while giving users controls to view, edit and delete saved memories.

  • On Tuesday, Anthropic merged the memory systems for Claude and Claude Cowork, enabling the AI to retain context across different workflows and ensuring Claude starts tasks with preexisting knowledge.
  • Previously, users had to manually rebrief the AI when switching between tools, but the system now updates memory in real-time as you chat, eliminating the need to restart projects when handing tasks to Cowork.
  • Anthropic excludes sensitive information like government IDs or criminal history from memory by default, though users can opt to include other sensitive topics by toggling a new setting with associated notifications.
  • Users can now view, edit, or delete specific topics within the settings menu, with corrections applying globally to ensure Claude maintains only the information they want retained.
  • While memory is enabled by default for Free, Pro, and Max plans, these features remain off for Enterprise and Teams users, reflecting a broader industry trend of developing 'super apps' that consolidate desktop offerings.
