Anthropic is discussing a new custom chip with Samsung
The company has not decided the chip’s use, server integration or performance as it weighs a broader hardware strategy, according to the report.
- On Thursday, The Information reported that Anthropic is in talks with Samsung Electronics to explore manufacturing a custom AI chip, though the company declined to provide further details regarding the potential partnership.
- Anthropic's shift to active development follows the hiring of Clive Chan, who previously helped build OpenAI's custom chip program, as the company's annualized revenue surpassed $30 billion earlier this year.
- Last week, OpenAI unveiled its first custom chip, a Broadcom-built "Intelligence Processor," designed to reduce dependence on Nvidia hardware as AI companies seek custom silicon independence.
- The project remains in its early stages, with Anthropic yet to determine the chip's specific purpose or performance targets; meanwhile, Samsung shares rose 8.39% to about $201 in Seoul.
- Anthropic told TechCrunch that chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia will remain pivotal to its strategy, while Cramer cautioned that "reports based solely on unnamed sources can move markets prematurely.
