EA Will Shut Down Anthem in January

Electronic Arts revealed that the servers for BioWare’s online game Anthem will be permanently closed on January 12, 2026, with the game being removed from digital storefronts on August 15, 2025.
The shutdown follows BioWare's cessation of active Anthem development in February 2021 and cancellation of the Anthem NEXT redesign, as the studio refocused on other projects.
Anthem launched in January 2019 to lukewarm reviews, struggled with bugs and grindy gameplay, sold five million copies by December 2023, and stopped receiving content updates years ago.
EA ceased premium in-game currency sales as of July 3, 2025, allowing players to use remaining balances until servers go offline, at which point the game will become unplayable.
This shutdown comes amid EA's extensive staff cuts and studio restructurings, including BioWare layoffs in 2023, signaling a full company pivot away from Anthem toward new titles like Mass Effect 5.
