German finance chief pledges reforms to reverse economic slump
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil defended the governing coalition’s economic policies and pledged to push ahead with additional reforms by the end of the year to help spur growth.
The budgets for this year and next are not yet decided, but the finance minister is already looking at the budget for 2027. In a letter to the departments, Klingbeil warns to save. It threatens new conflict potential.
Federal Finance Minister Klingbeil has already called for concrete savings proposals for the budget of 2027 from his colleagues in the cabinet in the coming weeks.
The budgets for this year and next are still not decided, but above all the budget for 2027 employs the Minister of Finance. Klingbeil therefore prefers the discussions.
The federal budget of 2026 has not yet been approved by the Parliament, already Minister of Finance Klingbeil is working on the budget for the following year. By letter, he calls for "substantial proposals for consolidation" from all departments.
