Durham police arrested the final teen suspect in a July 2 assault where a Muslim woman was swarmed and assaulted at a Pizza Pizza restaurant, with no evidence of hate motive.
- Durham Regional Police investigators announced they arrested the last outstanding suspect in the swarming at an Oshawa Pizza Pizza and charged a 15-year-old girl from Oshawa over the weekend.
- On July 2 the alleged assault occurred shortly after midnight at the Pizza Pizza restaurant at 199 Wentworth Street W., Oshawa, after the victim intervened to stop theft and a suspect jumping behind the counter.
- The employee described the female suspects as children and said the victim, a woman in her 40s, was repeatedly punched, stomped, and had her hijab ripped off during the attack.
- Authorities noted police had previously charged two girls aged 13 and 14 and identified an 11-year-old boy who cannot be charged, while the victim's daughter said her mother is deeply shaken.
- Advocates in the Muslim community said the attack has caused anxiety amid rising Islamophobic incidents, while Durham Regional Police investigators found no evidence it was hate-motivated and the National Council of Canadian Muslims called it `appalled and disgusted`.
