Ann Godoff, a Top Editor and Publisher of Best Sellers, Dies at 76
Ann Godoff led Random House and founded Penguin Press, nurturing dozens of best-selling authors and publishing five Pulitzer Prize winners, her partner said.
- On Feb. 24, Ann Godoff, an editor and publisher, died in Albany, N.Y., from complications of bone cancer, her partner Annik LaFarge said.
- Godoff spent more than three decades leading Random House before her 2003 ouster by Bertelsmann; eight days later, she founded Penguin Press and became its editor in chief and publisher.
- She championed numerous bestselling titles, including John Berendt’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Caleb Carr’s The Alienist, and recently edited works by Gisèle Pelicot, Gavin Newsom, and Michael Pollan.
- Peers and former colleagues noted more than two dozen authors left Random House to follow Ann Godoff, while Jonathan Karp said she showed how to blend cultural significance with commercial success and Esther Newberg called her 'an author’s publisher.'
- One of her final projects is a memoir by Frank Rich slated for next year, and Penguin Press continues to publish major literary works, including five Pulitzer Prize winners.
