Andy Burnham Backs Scrapping Alcohol Ban Dating Back to 1985
He said the 40-year-old restriction should be reviewed as Women’s Super League clubs have already tested stadium drinking.
On Saturday, Labour MP Andy Burnham questioned the ban on alcohol consumption at football stadiums while attending a match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, describing the restriction as "wrong."
The Sporting Events Act 1985 has prohibited fans from drinking within sight of the pitch for more than 40 years to deter hooliganism in England and Wales.
Fans at women's football games were recently permitted to drink following a successful trial, highlighting inconsistencies compared to rugby, tennis, or cricket matches where restrictions are fewer.
Police chiefs have warned against relaxing the legislation, though Burnham is considering overhauling the regulations should he become Prime Minister.
A 2021 fan-led review of football governance previously called for the law to be re-examined, positioning future policy changes as contingent on Labour priorities.
