Andy Burnham responds to reports of death from the plague in Russia
On Thursday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed reports of a suspected plague death in Russia while visiting Berlin, pledging to "monitor the situation closely" regarding potential biosecurity risks to the UK.
Last Friday, October 2, media reported that Darya Shipilova, a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, died after suspected pneumonic plague exposure, prompting Russian authorities to quarantine about 200 contacts.
The World Health Organization requested incident details from the Russian Federation, which responded on Tuesday by denying recent plague cases while confirming that 200 contacts remain under quarantine.
Jason Murphy, head of pharmacy at Chemist4U, stated there is "little risk" to the wider public, noting that pneumonic plague is not established in the UK and requires close contact to spread.
President Donald Trump said the United States is looking "very strongly" at the case, ensuring appropriate biosecurity measures are maintained as laboratory testing continues to confirm the official cause of death.
