Andy Burnham pledges not to increase income tax, VAT or National Insurance
Burnham said Labour may review other taxes after a finances check, but he kept a pledge to protect household taxes.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed Labour's commitment to protect Income, VAT, and National Insurance, pledging the three major taxes remain unchanged despite difficult Government financial decisions ahead.
Burnham warned that balancing the country's finances will not be easy, though he did not rule out asking for additional contributions through other parts of the tax system in the future.
Speaking with Gary Lineker for Goalhanger, Burnham emphasized fairness and said decisions are "not for now," rejecting approaches based on "grudges and agendas" that divide people.
Burnham plans to "meet him where he's at" with Trump, joking that Trump's prior description of Manchester as "some town" would not be popular in the city he once represented.
Future tax decisions will prioritize fairness, Burnham stated, as he reviews the state of national finances before considering any changes beyond Labour's manifesto commitments.
