Amul, Mother Dairy hike milk prices by Rs 2/litre across India, blame higher cost

The companies cited higher cattle feed, packaging film and fuel costs, while Mother Dairy said farmer procurement prices rose about 6% in a year.

  • On Wednesday, Amul and Mother Dairy announced a retail price hike of Rs 2 per litre for fresh milk across India, effective Thursday, May 14.
  • Rising costs in cattle feed, packaging film, and fuel prompted the decision, with the Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation citing substantial increases in the "cost of operation and production of milk."
  • Mother Dairy, which last revised prices in April 2025, stated the hike was "necessitated in view of the sustained increase in farmer procurement prices, of around 6 per cent over the past one year."
  • Member unions increased procurement prices by Rs 30 per kg of fat, a 3.7 per cent increase over May 2025, as Mother Dairy aims at "maintaining a fair balance between farmer welfare and consumer interests."
  • Mother Dairy sells around 35 lakh litres of milk daily in the Delhi-NCR market, and the price adjustment translates to about 2.5 per cent per litre, remaining lower than average food inflation.
